History of Boracay
The Boracay Island - "Paradise Island of the Philippines" - is a small island located just off the northern tip of Aklan province, in the western part of Visayas. Aklan is the oldest province in the Philippines and was organized by settlers from Borneo in the year 1213.
This Philippine island is composed of smaller barangays called Manoc-Manoc, Balabag, and Yapak. It is comprised of 2 main beaches: the popular White Beach facing Sulu Sea and the quieter Bulabog Beach facing Sibuyan Sea.
Before Boracay became what it is today, the island was home to the Ati tribe. At that time, it was not a beach yet; the sea was where the local tribes got fish from, while the forests acted as their houses. In the late 1800's, the Tirol couple of the nearby Panay island discovered Boracay and began to develop the land.
About Boracay Beach Resorts
Tourism in Boracay began in the 1970's, mostly attributed to the Anglo-American war film called "Too Late the Hero." The main setting of the film was in Boracay and Caticlan, another small town in Aklan and a jumpoff point to Boracay Island. Since then, people have become curious of the breathtaking scenes that can be seen through different times of the day on the island. Although tourism was pushed, it was not yet that popular as flight destinations were limited and expensive.
During the 1980's, adventurous backpackers started discovering the beautiful, virgin White Beach. It was yet a secret hideaway that only a few knew about, and only 2 or 3 small resorts can be found on the beach itself.
Because of the continuous efforts of the local government, Boracay Island, particularly the 3.5-kilometer White Beach, slowly became a prime tourist destination all over the world. Boracay is now more accessible as cheap flights are offered by various flight carriers in the Philippines. Many Boracay resorts and hotels have also scattered on the beach, ranging from affordable family rooms to luxurious honeymoon suites.
When to go to Boracay, Philippines
Peak season is from March to early June, when it's summer time in the Philippines. During this time, many Boracay beach resorts are fully booked so it is best to book as early as possible. Boracay resorts are even more packed during the Chinese New Year (usually end of February, depending on the Chinese lunar calendar), holy week (usually every first or second Thursday to Sunday of April), and Christmas to New Year.
Low season is from mid-June to October. At this time it is mostly rainy in the Philippines, though the sun does shine from time to time. During this season, many Boracay resorts and hotels give huge discounts or free extra nights.
